Let’s see some First Nations/Native American actors in Legend of Korra: Book Two!

racebending:

Something that really set Avatar: The Last Airbender apart from other Asian-based animated series was the show’s talented voice acting cast.    As Asian American viewers, we particularly appreciated that the show cast so many talented Asian American voice actors, including Dante Basco and Mako!

With voice actors, there is a lot more versatility in casting because the actor is primarily providing the voice, not the visual character design.   Fittingly, the voice cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender was diverse in many ways.  That being said, it was still meaningful to see so many Asian American actors featured on the series, playing many of the Asian American characters.

With the announcement that the next season of Legend of Korra will be set in the Inuit-inspired Southern Water Tribe, we know that the show will introduce many new Water Tribe characters.   Just as it is rare for Asian American voice actors to have the opportunity to play Asian-inspired characters, it’s also rare for First Nations voice actors to have the opportunity to play characters inspired by their cultures.   The talent is out there waiting to be discovered, and we look forward to seeing it showcased in Book Two!

Reblog if you support increasing the visibility of First Nations/Native American actors in Legend of Korra!

Finally done with these! KORRA GANGNAM STYLE!! I am just really obsessed with this song right now so I decided to do something about it…Just some fun/stupid sketches for the Korra fandom. :) There’s a possibility these may be up for sale as mini prints at the Kamira booth for Sakura Con 2013. I had fun making these.

Masami Heartbreak Recovery, Day III

  • Devoting self to Tahno forever and ever
  • Basking in the perfection that is this fanart
  • And yeah, the Masami still hurts
  • But did I mention Tahno

Mako looked to the dishes, trying to hide his obvious surprise, and unable to meet her eyes.

All those naps during her board meetings, ditching their friends moments before he himself had to leave to deal with police work…

It all made sense.

She had the money, which meant she had the means to invent all of the gadgets that put her ages ahead of the Republic City PD.

She had the cover; a spoiled billionaire who spent her days burning her parents’ money, throwing charity events she never attended, and going off on extravagant and over-the-top trips to the other nations with a supermodel on each arm every other weekend.

She had the motive too; Asami had lost her mother to a firebending crook when she was just a child, and her father six months ago to Amon, turning into a criminal himself.

“I have somewhere to be,” she said, and brushed past him.

He didn’t bother to stop her. Hell, he didn’t know what to do. Should he tell Comissioner Beifong? Korra? Should he stop her? Try to arrest her?

“Where are you going?”

She was already gone.

Happy Asami Appreciation Life Day~

At first we thought Mako was Batman, but we were wrong. This way is much better. :)

AW SNAP. Make it real everybody! There are vigilantes running around in Republic City, and it’s not just the Avatar.

Bolin Thoughts in Book 2

What I think would be interesting would be further exploration in how Bolin feels about he compares himself towards his brother, and by extension how other people would compare him to his brother. Now, I haven’t seen the clips from Comic-Con, and just knew these things from other people’s information that trickled down to mine, so whoever is reading this, please feel free to correct me or to add stuff if you’re so inclined.

It can happen in something basic, such as occupations. Bolin takes on the mantle as the Fire Ferrets’ team captain, while Mako would move on to be a police officer. Both are in positions of authority, but the difference lies in how it came to be and how it’s being utilized.

It’s conceivable that Mako could be inspired by his role in stopping the Equalist Revolution and wants to contribute in safeguarding society from violent people. He would move on from Pro-bending and go become a police officer which would match his protective personality and expand his desire for stability towards a larger purpose that contributes to everybody. Mako probably struck out on his own in that decision and made the conscious choice to leave the Fire Ferrets, which would symbolically mean that he’s leaving his childhood behind to go and be a responsible adult.

Bolin, however, inherited his role as a Fire Ferret team captain, and it appears that he’s the only one of the original Fire Ferrets to continue on the team trademark. And by no means would it be undeserved, because his skills as a player is nicely displayed in the base-splitting Book Air Episode 5 “The Spirit of Competition” where pre-heartbreak shows that he can be a very good Earthbender when driven to do so.

But how would it feel for Bolin for this to happen, who in his bio in the Avatar Wiki:

What gets under Bolin’s skin is that he is second to Mako in everything, such as age, fighting rank, and even getting girlfriends.

He would probably be compared even more to Mako because whatever he does as a Fire Ferrets captain would be measured against what Mako has done as a captain. The team is reputable enough by not only being the team Korra participated in and stopped Amon with her, but also as being the underdog team that started getting attention before she joined and was under Mako’s leadership. Bolin would be performing within Mako’s shadow, a shadow that has left to do other things. Also, in Book 2 Mako is probably still way more high profile than Bolin would be, since he can attach more titles that Bolin would: Mako the former captain of the Fire Ferrets; Mako, the Avatar’s boyfriend who helped her stopped Amon personally; Mako, the talented Firebender (by Amon’s estimation); and finally, Officer Mako. Bolin would still be “Pro-Bender Bolin:” Mako’s little brother; Korra’s friend (which is actually a pretty swag affiliation); and the “new” Fire Ferret captain.

And this isn’t criticism about Mako or Bolin, what I’m writing about is how it would feel to be Bolin and have a brother with those kind of descriptors attached to him, and maybe it would produces even more reasons to feel a little second best. Mako has symbolically matured by moving on and becoming a police officer so that he can be some sort of productive member of society that is respectable. It seemed as though Bolin has stayed the same, living not only in Mako’s former responsibilities but also witnessing the elder brother’s successes.

So what I’m guessing is that Book 2 is going to set up Bolin to have these feelings, to confront them, and hopefully gain meaningful character development that shows someone gaining ownership in his self-worth, in becoming someone who can pass on a legacy, and in having his own social circle that doesn’t revolve around his brother (and potentially Korra) that would value him as Bolin and not just Mako’s little brother or Korra’s friend.

The Howard Hughes type of guy that Bolin is going to be friends with is certainly a step in a good direction (because seriously, doesn’t these Fire Ferret brothers know other people and have their own friends to be with when they’re not around each other?)

Reverse folding i.e. right over left, means the body has been prepared for funeral or you are on a suicide mission.

Dear fan-artists, the show does it right, and so can you.

Thanks.

Modern Team Uh-vatar

Everything will be uh-vatar if Tahno eventually joins the crew. Or maybe I am putting way too many hopes into that little ‘See ya around, Uh-vatar’. But I wanted both Tahno and Iroh being here anyway, because I lohve them.
Excuse me for Bolin. I am really sorry ahaha, baby I apologise to you, too. I gave you a Pabu badge and a music player, so maybe it will be easier for you.
~Bolinnn in the deeeppp~
Actually I not as satisfied with this as I was with Gaang, but at least I tried..
And I guess you’d better click on High res and then open in a new tab so at least it will be in normal quality.
Hope you’ll like this:)

About

A bunch of notes and cheats that will remind me and others what I love, what I desire, what I hope for, and what I despair over.
I have many interests: Final Fantasy, Dragon Age, Assassin's Creed, a LOT of anime, cinema, fashion, and fine arts. It's a mix of high and low culture (mostly low), but both are equally valuable in the meaning that's applied them. I have my own OTPs, and I respect many other people's OTPs. I just happen to be very emotionally invested in mine.
