Reeve being an Inspire, even if that only exists on the cutting room floor, really spoke more about him to me when you think about what he’s done in the games. 

It’s the ability to “breathe life” into inanimate objects, like bestowing a spirit. That’s like, freaking Geppeto right there, and all the other sci-fi tropes about robots and artificial intelligence and what it means to have life. And that last bit goes along with the theme of FFVII very well, tbh. 

Like, we get Hojo and et al doing the genetic imperialism and transhumanistic stuff, but then we get Reeve whose abilities go to the artificial intelligence or bestowing of a spirit into a construct. That would have been a fascinating addition to the lore that I wished SE thought more about. 

And that I think Reeve’s dad was a traditional toy maker whose small-town life gets steadily swallowed up by capitalism and big cities and stuff, and little Reeve likes to make buildings all around the house with wooden blocks and train tracks.

Preliminary roughs for Vincent’s design—the before and after of him.  He is somewhat tweaked from a hardened hitman to more of a scientist who’s been through basic training and knows how to hold a gun.  His outfit is inspired by victorian era cloaks, jackets and uniforms, as he is from a time removed from the main plotline.  He still has somewhat old fashioned clothes from when he first fell asleep after the experiments.  His headband has been turned into bandages for this design, from being a patient of the insane Dr. Hojo. 

I’ll talk more about him when I get further along in the design process, for now though…. rough sketches!

See, I don’t get why more people don’t pay attention to these two.  You’ve got this guy, right, who has lost every fucking thing except this girl, right, and she’s his world, right, and he sometimes feels like he’s not doing the dad thing right, right, so he tries to save the planet because if he saves the planet then he’s saving his girl, right, and if he does that, then he saves his hometown because she’s every tiny thing he loved about his home and she’s every tiny thing that makes him the man he is, right, and she loves him just because and she doesn’t need some special reason for it, she just does and he loves her and it’s simple and honest and a hell of a lot better than any goddamned love story because it IS a love story, only it’s about hope and dedication and a legacy of fucking devotion that you can only understand when you’ve lost everything in your world but still have your world and….and… I just fucking love these two, okay?  Right?  Right.   Barret also has one of the deepest subplots of the game where it encapsulates what everyone must have gone though with Shin-ra&#8217;s corporate imperialism.  Genetic trans-humanism gone awry aside, Barret&#8217;s backstory and inner demons was the most human story because this is something that can happen in the real world.

crimson-sun: I don’t usually post WIPs, but just in case anyone’s wondering why I’m not tumbling so much lately - I’m working hard on the next segment of Debt. To be quite honest, I have many doubts about this project, most of them to do with my scripting (in)ability. But since I’m using these pages primarily as comic practice, y’all have to forgive me if the story starts unwinding further down the track. But a finished project, no matter what the quality, is still better than an unfinished one, right? So I’ll keep at it, and hopefully retain your interest as I go along…! That man over there is playing Galaga!

Also not the gamersecrets submittee, but I’d just like to add onto this because I can.  Professor Hojo is more interesting than all of the other villains in FF7 combined.  He is at the crux of its conflict, and objectively, without him, FF7 doesn’t happen.  For FF7 to happen, Hojo needs to exist, and he needs to be as evil as he is.  For me to like him does not mean that I approve of his behavior.   I like him, I hate him, I love him, but the way I like him will never be the same as any other person’s love or hate of him, and I think that’s wonderful.  I will cry forever the moment “standards” are enforced on fans in the way they admire things creatively.  As far as I’m concerned, if you’re not hurting others, fanninate how you fanninate. I think one of the reasons current Final Fantasy titles are falling flat in the eyes of veteran FF fans is Square’s outright refusal to write this dangerously anymore.  They’ve made the bigtime radar, and I guess they only have room to create safe rebellion anymore.  Any remake Square is going to do of FF7 will have to address things like Don Corneo and Dyne and the scary, dirty, rusted masterpiece of horror movie that FF7 is, and I don’t think they’re interested in doing that.  I hope to be proven wrong.
